Paphos, a coastal gem on Cyprus’s southwest coast and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is perfectly suited for exploration on two wheels. With its stunning coastline, ancient ruins, and compact city center, renting a scooter offers visitors the freedom to discover hidden coves and archaeological treasures at their own pace.
Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) offer ideal riding conditions with mild temperatures (18-26°C) and minimal rainfall. These shoulder seasons also avoid the peak tourist crowds.
Summer (June–August) brings intense heat, often exceeding 32°C. If visiting during summer, plan rides for early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun.
Winter (December–February) is cooler (12-17°C) and wetter, with December and January being the rainiest months. While riding is still possible, be prepared for sudden showers and check road conditions.
1) The Coastal Cruise: Kato Paphos to Coral Bay
Start at the Paphos Harbor, wind past the medieval fort, and follow the coastal road northwest toward Coral Bay. This scenic route offers stunning sea views, access to sandy beaches, and plenty of cafes for refreshment stops.
2) Historical Circuit: Tombs of the Kings and Beyond
From the harbor, ride north to the Tombs of the Kings archaeological site, then continue toward the village of Chloraka. This route combines ancient history with charming local culture.
3) Akamas Peninsula Adventure
For the adventurous, the Akamas Peninsula offers rugged terrain and breathtaking natural beauty. Note that this route requires a buggy or off-road vehicle rather than a standard scooter . Many rental companies offer buggies specifically for Akamas exploration.
4) Wine Route: Tsada and the Villages
Head inland toward the village of Tsada to explore the wine-growing regions of Paphos. The cooler hillside temperatures provide relief from coastal heat, and the winding roads offer spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.
Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: 1) you can rent a small 50cc scooter with an ordinary B (car) licence or AM license; 2) you will need a car license or A1 (scooter) or A2 (small moto) driving licence for scooters with an engine capacity of 125cc; 3) a full moto licence (A class) is required for all scooters with an engine capacity more than 125cc. Some rental companies ask for an International Drivers Permit (IDP) and security deposit (cash or card); always check the terms of specific providers on the booking page before making a reservation.
